THINGS TO DO
Visit the Archaeological Museum
For those interested in history and culture, the Archaeological Museum of Durres is a must-see. It is the largest archaeological museum in Albania and features fine-boned sculptures and statues, delicate gold jewellery, amphoras recovered from the seafloor, and beautiful painted vases and pots that are so perfectly preserved they look as if they were painted just yesterday. Most notably is the collection of miniature busts of Venus, Durres’s most worshipped goddess in ancient times.
Enjoy the view from the Royal Villa
Before fascism and communism, there was an Albanian monarchy, which lasted only 11 years. High up on a hill close to hotel Nais Beach you’ll find the Royal Villa of Durres which was built as a summer palace for King Zog I. He only used it for a single year before he abdicated the throne to Mussolini and the Italians. It was later used during Communist times, as a lavish place to welcome dignitaries such as Khrushchev and Jimmy Carter, on official visits.
Explore the Amphitheatre of Durres
The Amphitheatre of Durres is located in the center of the city, only 600 meters from the hotel, and dates all the way back to the 2nd century AD. It is the largest amphitheater ever built in the Balkans, with an original capacity of 20,000 people. The amphitheater was excavated in 1966 and has since become an iconic part of the city and one of the most popular things to do in Durres for Albanians and foreign tourists alike.
Take a walk in Taulantia Promenade
On warm summer evenings, a walk on the promenade next to the sea is the mandatory thing to do in Durres. You’ll find Albanian families dressed up in their evening best, participating in what is fondly called the “Durres Parade.”
